Sei Ching Joanna Sin

Welcome to my web site. I am an Assistant Professor at the Division of Information Studies, Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information (WKWSCI), Nanyang Technological University (NTU). I received my PhD and Master’s degree from the School of Library and Information Studies (SLIS) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. My main research interests are information behaviors, library use, and information equity.

Research

Person-in-Environment (PIE) framework

My current projects focus on building and applying a Person-in-Environment (PIE) framework. These projects use a geographic information system (GIS) to combine Census data, library service statistics, and individual-level surveys to test the factors affecting individual’s library and Internet use. The goals are to:

Mapping Census data in Google Earth

  • map and measure the pattern and magnitude of information divide
  • test the mechanisms and impacts of social-structural and information inequities on individual’s behavior
  • provide empirical evidence for policy recommendations, especially with respect to bridging the information divide and planning of library and information services

The research section includes more information on my studies. I also created several digital maps based on Census data. They can be viewed directly on this site or downloaded as KMZ files to be viewed in your Google Earth application.

Resources

The resource section provides a rather eclectic list of free and open source software (F/OSS), applications & materials. Currently, the resources are mainly related to statistical computing, GIS, visualization, digital libraries, and editors.
